PRIMITIVE 14" x 9" AFRICAN TRIBAL ART CONGO KUBA TUKULA TRIBE CARVED WOODEN BOX

This is an primitive antique, African
Kuba
made, hand carved, wooden lidded
Tukula
box.
Estate find. It had wood shavings(looked like saw dust)when I found it in the middle of an African mask collection, but I had no idea what it was so I dumped it out. You can actually still see bright red staining inside.
These wooden boxes were used for storing Tukula, a reddish powder made from trees. Mixed with palm oil to creat a paste that was used to paint hair, face, and body for tribal ceremonies.
The box measures approximately 14 3/8in. wide x 9in. by about 4 1/2in. thick to the face on the lid and almost 2in. thick without.  There is some mild wear to this

box from age and handling as well as a crack on either side of the of the base.
