Frank Lloyd Wright's Emil Bach House - 1915
The Prairie School, that truly American form of architecture, has its roots in the Midwestern plains, especially the state of Illinois. Frank Lloyd Wright popularized the style both through his built designs and also through his many publications. In the April 1907 edition of Ladies Home Journal he published a design for a “fireproof house” that became the inspiration to architects and builders all over the country. Wright himself built several variations on this seminal design. The Emil Bach Residence is one of these, an exquisite example that includes many subtle features often lost on other Wright projects, such as the trellis that extend from the house over its surrounding terraces.
This two story house, built over a basement, has a compact, efficient, almost square plan. The first floor contains Living, Dining and Kitchen areas flowing freely one to the next, anchored around a substantial brick fireplace. A beautiful feature in this room is the alcove opposite the fireplace, surrounded on 3 sides by windows. The second floor contains 4 bedrooms and a bathroom. This upper level could be reconfigured to accommodate a second bathroom quite easily, making a Master Bedroom suite.
The prints you are purchasing are crisp, high resolution black line copies on white bond paper. The original drawings were beautifully delineated in 1966. This extensive set of 14 drawing sheets includes a cover sheet, 2 floor plans, 4 exterior elevations, and 2 detailed sections. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. These plans are ideal for a moderately sloping site, in which case a walk-out basement could be built. With a standard basement these plans would work very well on a flat site. This house would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. Including porches and terraces, this house has outside dimensions of approximately 58’x61’.

SHIPPING: Your drawings are shipped to you, by US Postal Service, rolled, not folded, in a Priority Mail tube.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Victorian Style home, not a pseudo-Victorian tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Orders shipped to addresses outside the USA may be subject to customs duties at their destination. The buyer is responsible for any such duties.
