    Description

KM 8, one year type, issued for the 75th anniversary of the death of Robert Louis Stevenson. Copper-nickel crown, with Stevenson on the reverse.
For many of us, the first of his works that we think of is "Treasure Island", but the authors of "The Numismatic Aspects of Leprosy" honored him (and specifically mention this commemorative coin) with a full page in their book (p.160), for a far different example of his writing. When Stevenson arrived in Samoa in December of 1889, he learned of a minister in Hawaii that had published a letter to smear the reputation of Father Damien, who had worked with the lepers of Molokai for 16 years until he died of leprosy.
"Stevenson's rebuttal, 'Open Letter To The Reverend Dr. Hyde of Honolulu', has been called 'one of the most searing philippics in English since the days of Alexander Pope.' Stevenson gave a point-by-point, nearly word-by-word, retort to each of Hyde's allegations."
(Is this also the source of the name for one of his characters in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"?)
This country is listed as Western Samoa in the older Krause catalogs, and under Samoa in the more recent catalogs.
