In 1664, the Norwottuck Indians, of whom the lands were bought by the first settlers, were allowed to build forts on condition that they would not harbor hostile Indians, nor violate the Sabbath by carrying burdens. One of the these forts was located on what is now known as Fort Plain, the plateau in the rear of the site of the oldEast Street school-house, overlooking the meadows of the Manhan and Connecticut. The bridge seen in the picture is at the foot of the plateau. Here was the last residence of Indians within the limits of Easthampton. At the opening of King Philip's War, in 1675, they joined the hostile forces, and quitted the land of their nativity.
