In the 1790s Julius Foster built the wood frame portion of this house to serve as public house. It is more reminiscent of the coastal Dutch architecture than of the upper Delaware. Sometime after 1812 Foster’s son-in-law James Armstrong added the stone portion of the house. Still lived in by the Armstrong family at the time these drawings were made in 1970, this early American gem has aged gracefully.
This extensive set of 10 drawing sheets includes a site plan, 4 floor plans, 4 elevations, 2 beautiful sections that show the unique timber framed roof and several additional interesting details of early American construction. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. Built over a full basement the first floor contains four rooms and a bath in the original wood portion of the house as well as additional rooms in the stone wing. The second floor has 4 bedrooms in the wood portion with an attic room over the stone wing. The large gambrel roofed attic is undivided and unfinished, with the magnificent timber framing fully exposed. Although ideal for a flat site, these plans would also work on a moderately sloping one. This house would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. Including porches, the main house has outside dimensions of approximately 43’x70’.
Please visit my other auctions for many other drawings I am offering. I have house plans in wide variety of styles including Colonial, Craftsman, and Prairie, as well as plans of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Irving Gill, Purcell & Elmslie and others.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD:
These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic house, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress.
